Sowing clover or a mix of small cover crops on the soil surface once the auto is a week old keeps the top layer moist, feeds the microbes, and discourages gnats. It does compete a little for water in a small pot, so it makes more sense in three gallons and up than in a one gallon container. Suggested cover crop blends and when to chop them are discussed on
